Long load times and rubberbanding = infrequent fun. September 5, 2010 Armando N. Roman (Hillsboro, OR) I'm not a big racing game person, and most of my experience with the genre involves the Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing games. In fact, I just plain don't care about cars, and never even played a 'real' racing game like Gran Turismo or anything like that. So ModNation Racers had my interest since it looked like it was going to be Sony's answer to Mario Kart. Well, the gameplay is very, very similar, but there are a few big problems that keep it from taking the portly plumber's title. And I'll get this one out of the way right now- yes, a patch for the long load times has been released. But you know what? It only cut down the times by about 1/3. You'll still spend a lot of your time waiting for 1-3 minutes for a simple customization menu to pop up, or even for the track to load, even if you just played that very track seconds before and want to re-race.
ModNation Racers is a simple game to get into, and if you've played a Mario Kart before, it's just like that but with some differences here and there. Instead of doing a hop to drift, drifting has been assigned to the X button, so you can drift whenever you want with one simple press/hold. Drifting's an important part of the game too, since drifting fills your shield meter, which allows you to block attacks from the other racers. You can also stack weapons. When you drive into a weapon bubble, and if you don't use the weapon when you reach another bubble, your weapon will be upgraded. A regular homing missile (the red Koopa shell of this game) can be upgraded into a massive air strike that'll obliterate whoever gets caught in its zone. Unfortunately, there are a lot of weapon bubbles on the tracks, and with a lot of racers, that makes for a lot of weapons. When playing against the computer, be prepared to replay tracks over and over again after going from 1st to 12th when a lightning bolt takes you out just before you hit a ramp, and everyone else passes you while you're trying to recover, only to be hit by another weapon. I swear, the AI waits until right when I pass a car before using a weapon, usually on the final lap.
The Career mode's the basic single player game, and has some pretty fun cutscenes to move the story along. It's nothing special, but younger players will get a kick out of some of the jokes. There are also the usual split screen and online gameplay modes, and setting up races with other people on PSN is easy. You can also report any obscene material. I had way more fun playing online with other people, but even that was crippled by the long waiting and load times.
The main selling point for MNR though is the creation aspect. You can make your own characters, tracks and cars. Do you want Mario or Samus? Make 'em or download 'em. How about one of the monsters from Where the Wild Things Are driving a school bus? You can do that too. The tracks can get pretty creative too, but there's one thing I thought could've been handled better. You're limited to what you can create at first. Like LittleBigPlanet, you can only create levels and characters with items you've unlocked or won in the main game. Each track has different goals- just winning the race wins you some basic items, but meeting the other requirements gives you the really good stuff. These goals are usually easy to earn, with some of them being just hitting 3 other racers with weapons or activating panels on the tacks. But again, good luck getting those on the first try with how often the computer lays the smackdown on you. I had to replay one track 18 times before I finally came in first place with the goals met for some stupid stickers to use on my car.
Overall, I wanted to like ModNation Racers, but stupidly cheap AI and those damn load times kept me from getting more out of it. Yes I know that it's more of an online game than a single player one, but if you want to get items for customization, you need to get really, really good at the single player mode. Also, I couldn't help but feel like this would've been better suited as a downloadable game for half (or less) the price it's currently going for. With all the great customization elements...the tracks, framerate issues and loading times made it feel a bit cheap. This is one I'll definitely wait on getting until the price goes down a bit more. 'glad it was only loaned to me.
Great Game, whole family loves it! August 19, 2010 BDBusmma (St. Louis, MO USA) This is a great game. My whole family loves it and my wife usually doesn't like video games. It has so many options from split screen play for 4 people, online gaming, online gaming in split screen (a little disappointed online splitscreen is only for 2 players vice 4, but no biggy). Load times for each segment of the game are a little slow, but not bad. You will not be disappointed if you buy this game no matter the age of player!
PSP is extremely different from PS3 August 19, 2010 Brandon J. Negri 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Let me just start off by saying I absolutely LOVE this game. I hear big babies complaining about load times and difficult career mode. Meh. Its a little difficult at times, but I have completed it and love this tremendously. I'm not about to post a review based on how much I love this, I'm here to warn people that the PSP version IS NOT the PS3 version. What it comes down to is that the PSP is not capable of the magnitude of gaming that it's larger counterpart is. If you are going to buy this game, make sure it is the PS3 version. The handling and controls on the PSP is too dificult to harmonicaly switch between drift, sideswiping, shielding, boosting and fireing weapons. I own both versions and am a completely unbiased reviewer, and I must say the PSP version is far short of the PS3 version.
Great game with unlimited fun August 11, 2010 Jorge Rivera This game offers a wide range of tracks off-line to achieve experience. However, the real game happens on-line (sharing your mod, carts and tracks creations).
Cons: Takes too long to load track info.
terrible game design August 10, 2010 Eric Etter (Water Mill, NY USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
this game is good and i want to give it a five star rating but i just cant. the gameplay is hard, and extremely cheap. you get blown up around almost every turn the computer players all seem to shoot their load outs at you at the same time and it is nearly impossible to clear any of the in game challenges. do not buy for children because they will be in tears.
